Argentina’s Grain Industry – Implications for Australia

November 16, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm UTC+8

The Australian Exports Grain Innovation Centre will present a an economic study about Argentina’s Grain Industry and the implications for Australia.

David Hughes from Argentrigo and Emiliano Huergo from Clarin Rural are traveling from Argentina to participate for the discussion and help us finding synergies between Australia and Argentina.

The report, which forms part of AEGIC’s Competitor series, provides a comprehensive overview of Argentina’s changing grain production, logistics and export prowess, with a focus on the implications for the Australian wheat industry. This report complements our previous reports on Canada, Ukraine and Russia and aims to provide description and analysis that informs and guides a strategic response by the Australian grains industry.
After a marked change in government and economic policy, Argentina’s grains industry has rapidly changed and Argentinian grain exports have increased. Planned additional changes
in government policy will further strengthen Argentinian grain exports and provide enduring comparative advantage to Argentina’s grains industry. The Australian Export Grains
Innovation Centre (AEGIC) examines these developments and reports on their implications, particularly for Australia’s wheat industry.

Key presenters

Professor Ross Kingwell, AEGIC’s chief economist, will present the key findings of AEGIC’s latest report Argentina’s grains industry: implications for Australia. He will explain the impact of rising Argentinian wheat exports on international markets, the likely impact on the Australian industry and the options it has to respond.
David Hughes, Argentinian farmer and president of ArgenTrigo, (Argentina’s peak wheat industry association) will outline the nature of grain farming in Argentina and what has been driving the impressive growth in Argentine’s production and export of wheat over the past five years. David will also describe how farmers groups support profitable farming systems in Argentina through its impressive CREA (Regional Consortiums of Agricultural Experimentation) network and how this may have relevance for Australian farmers.
John Henchy, Executive Officer for the Farm Machinery & Industry Association of WA (FMIA), will describe the opportunities the Argentine agricultural sector presents for Australian farmers, particularly in relation to machinery produced in Argentina and their suitability for use by Australian farmers.
